GUATEMALA
Our Guatemala Program is moving so
well that most families will be matched with a child within 2 months upon submission of Dossier
and will arrive home within 6-8 months.
At birth, the baby is moved into Foster Care until the paperwork process is complete. Upon
acceptance of the referral a social worker is assigned to the case in Guatemala and collects a
full social and medical history from the child’s birthmother, which will be passed along to the
adoptive family. Meanwhile the case is moving through the Guatemalan courts. The process is now
running approximately 4-5 months from time of match to the completion of the adoption. US
Immigration requires mandatory DNA testing to confirm the parental relationship of the child,
which is part of the adoption process. Once the DNA test has been completed families can go
visit the child in Foster Care as often as they would like. Babies could be as young as 6 months
by the time they come home.
Adoption Source, Inc. recommends that at least one parent travel to bring your child home.
However, escorting is available for those families who cannot travel. The escorts will be
Adoption Source staff from the USA.
